The LATPEE Laboratory participated in the implementation of the research project “Emissions of Pollutants from New Tobacco Products (ERYKA)” with code 80247, funded by the Research Committee of the HOU (Hellenic Open University). The project was implemented on a multi-annual basis, started on the 1st of January 1, 2022, and was completed on the 10th of December, 2025. The total approved funding for the project amounted to 60,000 euros, an amount that was almost entirely absorbed, demonstrating effective resource management.
Within the framework of the project, an experimental study was conducted on the emissions of pollutants from new tobacco products, such as electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and dry herbs, under controlled conditions, utilizing LATPEE’s advanced measurement and analytical equipment. Specialized measurement protocols were developed and applied for particulate and gaseous pollutants (such as PM, BC, CO, and organic compounds), while extensive data processing and analysis were also carried out. Particular emphasis was placed on comparing emissions by type of new tobacco product and correlating them with existing data, in order to highlight their potential impact on health and air quality in the future.
The project’s results include detailed experimental measurement databases, methodological protocols for studying emissions from new tobacco products, and comparative analyses by product category. Furthermore, the findings were utilized for writing scientific publications and presentations at conferences, enhancing LATPEE’s international place in the field of air quality research and the effects of smoking and new tobacco products. Through the ERYKA project, LATPEE demonstrated its capability to implement complex, experimental, and interdisciplinary projects, making full use of its laboratory infrastructure and the high-level expertise of its research team.
